BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior midfielder Ali Brown scored a pair of goals off free kicks, including the game-winner with 9:26 to play, to give Indiana a 2-1 victory over Ohio State on Sunday, Sept. 24, on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium. The win extended the Hoosiers' unbeaten streak to eight games and provided their first 2-0-0 Big Ten start since 2004.
Brown scored her second goal of the game in the 81st minute off a free kick from 25 yards out on the left side. Brown unleashed a bending shot that tucked just under the crossbar and inside the far post to beat keeper Lauren Robertson. The game-winner moved the Hoosiers to 5-2-3 on the season. IU has not lost since Sunday, Aug. 27, against Creighton at the Wisconsin Soccer Invitational.
The Hoosiers took a 1-0 lead into the half after Brown tallied her first goal of the contest with less than a minute to play in the stanza. Brown sent a spinning ball toward the far post, and the spin caused the ball to bounce off the ground and just inside the post to put IU up 1-0 with 34.6 seconds to play in the half.
The Buckeyes (4-4-1, 0-2-0 Big Ten) came out of the locker room quickly, and netted the equalizer just 27 seconds into the second half. Ohio State sent a ball into the right corner, where OSU's Lisa Grubb chased it down. Grubb sent a cross toward the box that deflected off Emily Francis directly to the foot of Lara Dickenmann, who deposited it into the net from point-blank range. It was the first goal that the Hoosiers have allowed this season at Armstrong Stadium, where IU is now 5-0-0 on the season.
Brown became the second Hoosier this season to post a two-goal outing, joining fellow senior Carrie DeFreece, who scored two goals against Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Sunday, Sept. 10.
Indiana outshot the Bucks 14-11 in the contest, as Robertson made five saves in goal. Stacey Van Boxmeer made three saves for the Hoosiers, making her the fifth IU keeper to exceed the 100-save mark in her career. Van Boxmeer now has 102 saves in her time with the Hoosiers.
IU returns to action on Friday, Sept. 29, when it will travel to East Lansing, Mich., for a matchup with Michigan State (4-4-1, 0-1-0 Big Ten). The Hoosiers will also face Michigan (4-4-2, 0-1-0 Big Ten) on Sunday, Oct. 1, on the road trip. Each team lost its Big Ten opener at Penn State this weekend.
