BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Brian Ackley's header in the 94th minute lifted Indiana to a 1-0, overtime win over Kentucky on Sept. 27.
"When we look at games we look at performance and results, and tonight we got both," head coach Mike Freitag said. "We played very well. Kentucky played a tough game tonight, they were well coached, well organized and we finally came through in overtime.
"We made some changes tonight and we got good games out of several guys, including John Mellencamp and Ofori Sarkodie. It was a good victory."
The Indiana defense held Kentucky (7-2-1), which came into the game ranked third in the nation in scoring offense (3.11 goals per game) to just six shots on the night. Wildcat leading scorer Riley O'Neill, who came into the game ranked third in the country in points per game (2.78), had one shot on the night.
After 90 minutes of scoreless soccer, the two sides went into overtime. The Hoosiers (5-3-2) threatened right off the bat, with John Michael Hayden sending a shot in from about 20 yards out that Kentucky keeper Dan Williams saved.
Moments later, Indiana struck again, this time finding the back of the net. Mellencamp, taking a feed from Kevin Robson, sent a looping pass from just outside the 18-yard box to Ackley, who headed it home lower right for the decisive score.
The win was Indiana's first at home this season, and marked the fourth time in as many home contests that the Hoosiers had gone into overtime on home soil.
Although the Hoosiers controlled the ball for most of the night, attempts to set up scoring chances were thwarted by the Wildcats. Indiana had six shots in each half, while Kentucky took just two in the first half and four in the second. Indiana had all three shots in the overtime period.
Chay Cain earned his second shutout of the season for the Hoosiers, as he made three saves on the evening. His counterpart, Dan Williams, took the loss for the Wildcats, allowing one goal and stopping five shots.
The Hoosiers return to action on Sunday, Oct. 1, at Michigan State. Game time is set for noon.
