EAST LANSING, Mich. - Carrie DeFreece scored the game's only goal as the Indiana women's soccer team remained perfect in Big Ten play with a 1-0 victory over Michigan State on Friday, Sept. 29. The win capped off an undefeated September for the Hoosiers, who went 6-0-3 in the month. This is the first time in school history that the Hoosiers have accomplished that feat.
"This was a typical Big Ten contest, they are always close in scoring, and both teams had chances," head coach Mick Lyon said. "It was a question of who would get the break, and we did. The play of our back four and the support they received from the midfield was a big reason we earned the shutout."
DeFreece put the Hoosiers (6-2-3, 3-0-0 Big Ten) on the board in the 47th minute on a goal from the left corner. DeFreece lofted a ball toward the far post and it carried over leaping Spartan keeper Nicole Galas and landed just inside the post. It was DeFreece's fourth goal of the season and the seventh of her career.
The Spartans (4-5-1, 0-2-0 Big Ten) had a solid opportunity in the closing minutes off a free kick. Erin Doan lined up for the kick from 35 yards out, and curved a ball into the box, but Stacey Van Boxmeer snatched it out of midair to preserve the Hoosier victory. The Collingwood, Ont., native upped her record to 6-2-3 on the year and earned her fourth shutout of the season. That puts her ninth all-time on the Hoosiers' single-season list.
Michigan State had the best opportunity of the first half, when a Kristi Timar shot banged off the crossbar before being cleared by the Hoosier defense. A free kick by Lauren Sinacola carried into the box, where it bounced off a pair of Hoosiers right to the foot of Timar, who narrowly missed giving the Spartans a 1-0 edge in the contest.
The Hoosiers will face Michigan on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 1 p.m. EDT to finish off the weekend road trip. The Wolverines enter the weekend 4-4-2 (0-1-0 Big Ten) this season.
