OXFORD, Ohio - The No. 15 Indiana field hockey team improved its record to 3-1 on the season with a 2-1 win over Miami (Ohio) at Miami Turf Field on Sept. 5. After a defensive stalemate in the first half, senior forward Lydia Schrott and senior back Morgan Miller ignited the IU offense, pushing the Hoosiers past the RedHawks.
"We took a big step forward today," Indiana head coach Amy Robertson said. "Miami played a very good game and put a lot of pressure on us. I thought the team handled the pressure with confidence, experience and poise. This was a great victory for us against a good team"
Similar to IU's previous match against Ball State, defense characterized the first half. The match was nearly even heading into halftime, as both teams recorded two shots, respectively.
Schrott put the game's first points on the board, recording her sixth goal of the season in the 52nd minute. IU was able to draw a corner, setting up Schrott for the score. After the initial corner shot, the Quarryville, Pa., native converted her rebounded shot into the 1-0 advantage.
Miller gave Indiana the 2-0 lead in the 56th minute of the contest. The Gap, Pa., product utilized her powerful first shot off the penalty corner to send the ball past Miami goalkeeper Megan Stengel. The goal is Miller's third of the season and her first game winner of the year.
Miami answered in the 62nd minute, as Danielle Perrecone scored using a direct shot off the penalty corner, but it was not enough and the Hoosiers walked away with their third victory of the season.
For the match, junior goalkeeper Haley Exner recorded six second-half saves in 70 minutes of work, while Indiana posted nine shots to Miami's 11.
Indiana returns to Ohio this weekend to take on Ohio University and Radford. Both matches will be played at Ohio's Pruitt Field. The Hoosiers and the Bobcats square off at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8, while IU and Radford meet on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 2 p.m. The Indiana-Ohio match will be available on GameTracker via IUHOOSIERS.com.
