BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Carrie DeFreece's goal in the second half gave the Indiana women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Northern Arizona in the opening round of the Old National Bank Hoosier Classic on Friday, Sept. 8 at Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
Indiana combined DeFreece's goal with stifling defense to seal the victory and improve its record to 2-2-1 on the season. The Hoosiers outshot NAU 24-3 in the contest, including a 14-1 margin in the second half. Indiana has now outshot all five opponents it has faced this season.
The Hoosiers had a number of opportunities to break onto the scoreboard in the first half, putting three shots on goal in the frame. The two best opportunites of the half, though, came on shots that narrowly missed the target.
Midway through the first frame, Beverly Markwort beat the defense into the box, but her shot missed just wide of the right post. In the closing stages of the half, Lindsay McCarthy let loose a shot from 35 yards out that fluttered past goalkeeper Elizabeth Winkelblech but clanged off the crossbar.
IU finally broke through at 48:20, with DeFreece netting her first goal of the season. The senior dribbled past a Lumberjack defender into the right side of the box and lofted a shot across the goal mouth. The ball carried over Winkelblech's head and into the goal to give the Hoosiers all the offense they needed in the game. Stacey Van Boxmeer earned the victory, making one save for IU.
Indiana's 24 shots is the second-highest total for the Hoosiers this season - they had 27 against Creighton on Aug. 27 - while the three shots allowed is a season-low. It is the fewest shots Indiana has allowed in a game since Sept. 30, 2004, when it defeated Oakland 3-0 and allowed just one shot.
The Hoosiers will have the Classic title on the line when they face Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the second round on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 1:30 p.m. The Panthers defeated Rhode Island in their opening match of the tourney. URI will face Northern Arizona at 11 a.m. in Sunday's first game.
