Hoosiers Drop Battle with Boilermakers, 73-51

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Two Hoosiers scored in double figures for the Indiana women's basketball team, as IU fell to 13th-ranked Purdue, 73-51 at Mackey Arena on Jan. 14.
Nikki Smith led the Hoosiers with 13 points, while Whitney Thomas added 10 points and nine rebounds.
Down by five, the Hoosiers (13-6, 2-4) used an 8-2 run sparked by a jumper from Smith at the 18:21 mark to tie the game up at 10-10 with 16:31 remaining in the first half. A pair of free throws from Purdue's Erin Lawless followed by a jumper from Lindsay Wysdom-Hylton put the Boilermakers (16-3, 5-0) back up by four, 14-10, with 15:29 on the clock. Indiana knotted the game at 14-14 by way of a layup from Thomas and a jumper from Sarah McKay, but a 19-10 run by Purdue sent the two teams into the break with the Boilermakers leading 33-24.
Purdue's Katie Gearlds got things going for the Boilermakers in the second half with a jumper at the 19:35 mark to increase the lead to 35-24, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Smith and Leah Enterline put the Hoosiers back in the game and down by five, 35-30, with 18:30 on the clock. A free throw from Wysdom-Hylton increased Purdue's lead to six, but a jumper from Thomas kept IU within four, 36-32, with 17:37 remaining in the game. However, a 14-4 run increased the Boilermaker advantage to 49-37 with 12:13 to go in the game. Purdue held on with at least a 12-point lead en route to a 73-51 win.
Purdue claimed this year's Battle of the Barn Burner trophy for a ninth straight time.
The Boilermakers shot 37.1 percent (23-of-62) to the Hoosiers' 29.2 percent (19-of-65). Purdue held the advantage on the boards, outrebounding Indiana, 52-34. However, Indiana forced Purdue into committing 19 turnovers, while the Hoosiers collected 11 steals.
Indiana returns home for a rematch with the Boilermakers on Sunday, Jan. 21. Tip-off against Purdue on Branch McCracken Court in Assembly Hall at 2:05 p.m. ET.
