EVANSTON, Ill. - The Indiana University volleyball team grabbed an early lead in all three games Friday night at Northwestern before eventually falling 3-0 (30-23, 30-26, 30-25) to the Wildcats. Senior Lauren Ditteon pounded 13 kills with two errors on 32 swings for a .344 hitting efficiency. Junior Juli Pierce dug 15 balls on the defensive side of the net.
Ditteon connected on her first of six game-one kills to give the Hoosiers a 3-0 advantage to begin the night. Ditteon continued to fire away in the early goings, recording IU's first three kills of the match. Northwestern took their first lead at 15-14, and the one-point Wildcat edge remained at 18-17 following an Indiana kill by Junior Erica Short. Northwestern then pulled away with a 6-0 run in the 30-23 win.
The Cream and Crimson jumped ahead in game two as well, winning seven of the first ten points. Sophomore Kelsey Hall ignited the offense with five put-aways in the second stanza. The Murrieta, California native excelled defensively as well with four digs in game two. Northwestern surged back into the lead around the mid-way point. Each time NU increased their lead by a few points, the Hoosiers responded with a run of their own to even the score. Indiana did it once again at the 25-25 mark, but the Wildcats were able to seize five of the next six points for the 30-26 win.
Ditteon regained her game-one form in the third frame, tallying five more kills on nine errorless attacks while Pierce tallied seven digs. In the end, Northwestern arose victorious, however, capturing a 30-25 victory. Indiana owned a 10-9 lead, but another big run by the Wildcats at that point put them ahead for good.
