COLUMBUS, Ohio - Indiana junior John Kevin Koehler shaved nearly three seconds off his season-best time in the 1,650-yard freestyle at the Ohio State Last Ditch on Saturday, Feb. 24, getting him closer to making the NCAA Championship field in the event.
Koehler won his time trial with a time of 15:11.71, significantly faster than the 15:14.62 he turned in at the Big Ten Championships a week ago in the same pool. His time was well below the NCAA provisional cut of 15:33.04, and inched ever closer to the automatic time of 15:05.87.
"It's a time that would have made NCAAs last year, so it puts him that much closer to making it this year," Indiana assistant coach Mike Westphal said. "It was a better swim than he had at Big Tens, and it's tough to go fast in a time trial."
Koehler competed at the NCAA Championships in the 1,650 free as a freshman in 2005. This year's meet is scheduled for March 15-17 on the campus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
