UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Despite upset victories in singles and doubles, the Indiana men's tennis team fell to Penn State, 4-3, on Sunday, April 22, to close out the regular season.
Thomas Richter led Indiana to upset wins at both No. 1 singles and doubles. Teaming with Dara McLoughlin at No. 1 doubles, the duo defeated No. 51 Ryan Berger and Michael James, 8-6. In singles, Richter downed No. 92 Michael James, 6-4, 7-5.
Other winners on the day were David Bubenicek and Arnaud Roussel. Bubenicek won in three sets at No. 2 singles, 7-6 (7), 2-6, 1-0 (7), over Ryan Berger. Roussel defeated Ryan Gormley, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.
With the Hoosiers (14-11, 4-6 Big Ten) and Nittany Lions splitting the singles, a close match at No. 3 doubles for the doubles point proved to be the difference. Roussel and Peter Antons fell to Brendan Lynch and Bradley Hunter, 9-7.
"It was a typical Big Ten weekend, every match is going to be a battle," head coach Ken Hydinger said. "Peter and Arnaud fought hard, we were hoping to get the third doubles. We fought hard in a tough environment and didn't quite get the job done."
The Hoosiers travel to Purdue for the Big Ten Championships, held April 26-29. Seventh-seeded Indiana will face 10th-seeded Iowa on Thursday, April 26, at 3 p.m. EST.
