BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Kevin Noschang gave No. 8 Indiana a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 25th minute, but the ninth-ranked Maryland Terrapins answered back just a minute later as the two teams played to a 1-1 double overtime tie at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium Friday night.
"It is a disappointing result for us, but it is early in the season and we have another game to get ready for," said head coach Mike Freitag. "Tonight we were not at our best, but you also have to give a lot of credit to Maryland. We will take a look at the positives and get ready for UCLA on Sunday."
The Hoosiers started the first half strong with Daniel Kelly nearly putting the squad on the board less than five minutes in. His laser shot from about 25 yards out landed right at Maryland goalkeeper Will Swaim.
While both teams kept up a good pace, neither could solidly posses the ball as back-and-forth play ensued. Noschang broke free in the 15th minute, but in a 1-on-1 with the `keeper sent his lob high.
Noschang took advantage of his next good look to put Indiana up 1-0 at 24:03. Charley Traylor played the ball up to Brian Ackley, with Ackley just getting a head on it. The ensuing pass landed at the foot of Noschang, who took his shot from the top of the goal box and sent it into the lower left-hand corner.
It was a short-lived celebration as the Terps came back with the equalizer just over a minute later. Rich Costanzo caught the IU defense on its heels and found an open Graham Zusi who sent home the score.
Maryland nearly had a 2-1 lead as Jeremy Hall sent a low roller and IU goalkeeper Chay Cain's moment on the save nearly took him into the net. Cain finished the night with six saves, including another near score, this one off the foot of Zusi, in the first overtime period.
"We have high expectations, so it is a disappointing result but we will learn from it," Cain said.
Cain played at a disadvantage in the first half as he was forced to wear a hat to block a blinding sun that was directly in his face for most of the 45-minute period.
"It is difficult dealing with the sun because your eyes are constantly refocusing," Cain said. "It is also a little different playing with a visor on because anything you do, even wiping your forehead, is different."
With the Hoosiers getting the better of play in the first half, it was a reversal of fortune in the second half as Maryland stretched the IU defense to its limit. Nine of Maryland's 18 shot attempts came in the second half, including the back-to-back attempts from Zusi which resulted in stops by Cain and the Indiana defense.
Brad Ring had a chance to put the game away for the Hoosiers in the waning minutes of regulation as he collected the rebound of Andy Adlard's corner kick, but Swaim tallied one of his four saves to keep the game deadlocked.
It was Noschang who nearly came up with the game winner in the 108th minute when his shot across the goal mouth was headed for the lower right corner before Swaim got his hand on it and tipped the ball out.
Noschang led the offensive attack with three shots, while Ring, Adlard and Kelly had two each. The Hoosiers finished with 13 shots on the night, including a 3-1 advantage in the second overtime.
Indiana returns to the pitch on Sunday as the adidas/IU Hoosier Credit Union Classic continues. The Hoosiers will face No. 1 UCLA at 2 p.m., following a match up between No. 11 Notre Dame and Maryland. The game between the Hoosiers and Bruins wil be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
Earlier on Friday the Fighting Irish were 2-1 winners over the Bruins with Alex Yoshinaga scoring the golden goal at 93:07. Also finding the net Notre Dame was Joseph Lapira.
