KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Indiana University volleyball team fell to 4-2 on the year after dropping a 3-0 (20-30, 22-30, 26-30) match to the University of Tennessee Lady Vols. The Hoosiers won two out of three matches over the weekend to finish in second place (out of five teams) in the 2007 UT Comcast Classic. Junior Erica Short and Freshman Ashley Benson were named to the all-tournament team for their outstanding efforts the past two days.
After falling behind 10-23 in game one, the Hoosiers regained their composure and outscored Tennessee 10-7 during the last 17 points of the 20-30 loss. Freshman Ashley Benson hit .500 (3-0-6) and recorded a block in the losing effort.
Unfortunately, an early deficit for the Hoosiers proved to be too deep again in the second game. Indiana's comeback came as close as 18-22, but stalled there. The Lady Vols eventually took a 30-22 decision.
Indiana came out of the locker room after game two energized and enthused, and it showed as they took a 5-3 lead. Tennessee was later forced to take a timeout at 13-9 following a four-point run by the Hoosiers. The Lady Vols stormed back after the break in action to tie the score at 14-14. IU counterpunched with a run of their own, seizing eight of the next nine points to jump ahead 22-15. Tennessee was able to bounce back, however, and eventually come away with a 30-26 win.
The Hoosiers return to action next weekend at the Valparaiso University Tournament held in Valparaiso, Indiana on Sept. 7-8. IU is slated to play Marshall, Western Michigan and Valparaiso in the tournament.
