WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Indiana softall team saw its season come to an end on Sunday in West Lafayette, Ind., with an 8-3 loss to the Purdue Boilermakers at the Varsity Softball Complex. Freshman Sara Olson drove in all three runs for Indiana with a two-run home run and an RBI single.
Purdue (35-20, 9-9 Big Ten) got four runs in the top of the first inning, all of which were unearned as a result of three Indiana errors in the frame. Kelly Miller drove in the fifth Purdue run with an RBI single in the second before Ashley Hall added a two-run single to give the Boilermakers an 8-0 lead through three innings.
Julia Hamilton started the fourth inning for Indiana (16-35, 6-14 Big Ten) with a bloop single in between the shortstop and left fielder and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches by Purdue starting pitcher Suzie Rzegocki. Two batters later, Indiana starting pitcher Sara Olson crushed her third home run of the season, a deep drive over the left field wall to cut the Purdue lead to 8-2.
Olson was back at it again in the sixth inning at the plate, dropping a single down the right field line that plated Hamilton from second base to make an 8-3 advantage for Purdue.
But that is as close as the Hoosiers would get, as Rzegocki (15-8) went the distance for Purdue to pick up the win. She allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits and struck out six.
Olson (3-9) took the loss for Indiana, going five innings and giving up eight runs, but only four were earned, on 11 hits and striking out three.
