PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Hoosiers got off to good start in the season opener at Rutgers on Friday, earning a 2-0 lead, but in the end, the Scarlet Knights came back to take the game in overtime. Amy Lewis of Rutgers had an assist and two goals in the second half to pull out the win.
Indiana came out firing, as junior forward Alina Valenti put in a rebound on a missed shot out of penalty corner in the 15th minute. Valenti's goal is the team's first on the season and already puts her ahead of her total last season.
In the 25th minute, junior forward Haley Funk sent a breakaway pass toward freshman Jaclyn Zamudio who dove forward to tap in her first career goal. The goal, which put the Hoosiers up by two, proved to be final score for IU.
Coming out in the second half, the Hoosiers saw a similar number of opportunities to the first half but were unable to capitalize.
Lewis took over the second half, assisting on a Karen Brewster goal and then putting home the tying goal in the game's 52nd minute and the winning goal in overtime. The win moves Rutgers to 1-0 on the season and 2-0 in the all-time series.
The Hoosiers are now 0-1 on the season and look to rebound against Saint Joseph's on Sunday. Sunday's contest will be played at Drexel University and is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. ET.
