BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University volleyball team (13-5, 2-2 Big Ten) dropped a 3-0 decision to the No. 8 Minnesota Golden Gophers (13-3, 4-0) Sunday afternoon inside University Gym, 25-20, 25-19 and 26-24. Libero Caitlin Cox was Indiana's top performer on the day, recording 20 digs.
Jordan Haverly was the best IU terminator with her 12 kills. Ashley Benson matched her with 12 points of her own coming via nine kills, four block assists and a service ace. Freshman Kelci Marschall was very efficient with her 20 swings, hitting .350 (9-2-20).
Indiana came out flat in the opener hitting just .184 opposed to the Golden Gophers' hitting pace of .333. Minnesota was able to immediately grab a lead they would relinquish in a 25-20 defeat for the Hoosiers.
Set number two was very similar as Minnesota rode an early lead to the 25-19 final tally. A few individuals for the Hoosiers began to click, however, in the second stanza. Haverly blasted six kills and dug five balls. Laura Matula was right there with her in the defensive backcourt, posting seven digs in the frame.
The Cream and Crimson then emerged from the locker room looking like completely different team than the first two sets. There were 11 tied scores and five lead changes during the third set as the Hoosiers looked to snag a set from the eighth-ranked team in the country. Marschall ignited the IU charge early on, giving the Hoosiers a 3-0 lead with two kills and a block for the first three points of the set. By the time set number three was in the books, Marschall put away six kills. Cox's 12 digs in the set was the main factor in Minnesota's team hitting efficiency dipping to .205.
Indiana led as late as 18-17 and evened the score at 24-24, but came up just shy in the end. Minnesota won 26-24 to clinch the match.
Head Coach Sherry Dunbar and her Hoosiers pack their bags next weekend, traveling to play contests at Illinois (Saturday) and Northwestern (Sunday).
