BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Two goals in the second period from senior Haley Funk and junior Katie Griswold wasn't enough as the Indiana field hockey team fell to No. 8 Michigan State, 6-2, on Friday, Oct. 9 at the IU Field Hockey Field.
The Spartans (10-3, 2-0) had a 4-0 lead coming out of the break, but the Hoosiers (7-5, 1-2) fought back and netted their first goal on a penalty stroke form Funk at the 45:31 mark. Nearly three minutes later, Griswold put the ball behind the keeper after she got it from senior Meg O'Connell to cut Michigan State's lead in half, 4-2.
However, the Spartans netted two more goals, one at the 59:14 mark and another with 65:57 on the clock to seal the win.
Griswold took two shots on the day, with redshirt sophomore Brenna Moeljadi taking a team-high three shots. Junior Mutsa Mutembwa tallied her fourth defensive save of the season. O'Connell tallied IU's lone assist. Junior Alex Mann started in goal and recorded six saves in 70 minutes.
Michigan State out-shot Indiana, 18-13.
The Hoosiers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 10, when they host Central Michigan at 1 p.m. ET at the IU Field Hockey Field. IU encourages fans to join them in a PINK OUT and wear pink to the game in the support of Breast Cancer Awareness.
