BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Despite arguably the best Hoosier serving performance of the season, Indiana fell short in a four-set (20-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-19) defeat to Purdue Wednesday night inside University Gym. The Hoosiers racked up a dozen aces on the night, their highest total of the year.
Ashley Benson accounted for four aces while Jordan Haverly and Laura Matula were right behind her with three aces each. Away from the service line, Kelsey Hall recorded her third double-double on the year, compiling 11 kills and 12 digs.
Kelci Marschall, who introduced the IU starting line-up for the Big Ten Network, led the way offensively with 14 kills at a .321 hitting pace. Setter Mary Chaudoin did a nice job staying aggressive in the front court, connecting on four kills in six attack attempts.
Whitney Granado set the tone early, acing the Boilermakers for the very first point of the match. Granado's ace was one of six for IU in the opening set. Add in 15 kills and a .303 hitting efficiency, and you get a 25-20 winner for the Cream and Crimson. Five different Hoosiers put down two or more kills in the balanced offensive attack. Indiana never trailed in the first set. Just as the set started with an ace, it ended the same as Caitlin Cox delivered the 25th point from the service line.
Indiana controlled the ball for most of the second set, evidenced by 17 kills and 19 more attack attempts than the Boilermakers. Unfortunately, Purdue's blocking was superb though, picking up seven and a half team rejections in the set. The Hoosiers battled back from several deficits, taking a two-point lead as late as 21-19 following a block by Benson and Hall. Purdue had a response, however, grabbing the next three points and eventually earning a 25-23 victory.
A five-point run for IU early in the third frame launched the Hoosiers to a 9-4 edge when Purdue's Head Coach Dave Shondell burned his first timeout. The Boilers would then quickly get back into the set and the lead would exchange hands seven times in the set. Marschall did all she could to fend of the Purdue comeback, crushing six kills while hitting .455 (6-1-11). Cox also played well, digging seven balls. It was not enough though as the final lead change occurred at 20-19 in favor of Purdue en route to a 25-20 third-set win.
Momentum continued for Purdue in the fourth frame. The Hoosiers put together several runs to trim their deficit, but eventually fell, 25-19.
Indiana is back at Friday night, traveling to Minneapolis for an 8 p.m. EST match against the Golden Gophers. A live audio broadcast will be available at IUHoosiers.com. Listen in as Dave Leno and Kyle Kuhlman call all the Hoosier action.
