LEXINGTON, Ky. - Through 110 minutes of play the Indiana men's soccer team could not find a way to manufacture a second goal against the Kentucky Wildcats as the game ended in a 1-1 double overtime tie Wednesday night at the UK Soccer Complex in Lexington, Ky.
Indiana is now 7-4-2 on the year, while Kentucky is 4-6-4. The Hoosiers move to 0-1-2 in overtime matches this season.
The Hoosiers held a commanding 21-13 advantage in shot attempts and had nine corner kicks, eight of which came in the second half, but could not find the back of the net from the run of play.
Junior forward Will Bruin tested UK goalkeeper Tyler Beadle eight minutes into the match with a shot that forced the freshman to leap while falling back for the save. The play began with a run up the left from junior midfielder Alec Purdie, who played the ball into the box. Freshman midfielder Nikita Kotlov dished off to Bruin, whose first shot was blocked. His second shot was off his left foot, resulting in the save.
About a minute later Kotlov had a flick header off a free kick from freshman midfielder Harrison Petts that ended up right in the arms of Beadle.
The Hoosiers controlled play for a majority of the first half, but it was Kentucky that struck first with a goal from Matt Lodge at 31:50, his third of the season. With the ball up in the air just outside the 18 yard box, sophomore midfielder Joe Tolen tried to head it out but the ball landed on the ground at the foot of Lodge, who cracked a shot into the lower left for the 1-0 lead. The Hoosiers had a chance to knot things up just 34 seconds later when Tolen found himself wide open six yards out, but he sent his shot wide right.
Indiana needed less that three minutes in the second half to tie things up when it was awarded a penalty kick at 47:13. The play began with a corner kick from senior midfielder Andy Adlard and as the ball bounced in the box Kentucky was called for a handball off a shot attempt from freshman midfielder Jacob Bushue. Adlard stepped up to the penalty spot and hammered home his fifth goal of the season. Adlard is a perfect 3-for-3 on penalty kicks this season.
Adlard gave his best effort for an Indiana lead in the 63rd minute when a shot off his right foot went across the face of the goal and forced Beadle to make a fingertip save. To the benefit of the Wildcats no Hoosier was there waiting to put home the rebound. Junior midfielder Chris Estridge, who came into the midfield off the bench in the first half and moved to left back to start the second half, also had a one-timer in the 54th minute that Beadle was able to knock down.
Estridge finished with a career-high six shot attempts.
Adlard continued to stay active in the offensive third for Indiana, attempting a nifty back heel shot that was cleared out by the Kentucky defense at 67:15. Estridge came up from his left back spot to take a shot from 20 yards out in the middle of the field that curled over the cross bar in the 70th minute. Bruin had yet another chance within a minute of Estridge shot as he came free for a 1-on-1 with Beadle, but the goalkeeper did a good job cutting off Bruin's angle, forcing him to shoot wide.
With Indiana continuing to attack the UK goal, Purdie had a shot five yards out on the far post that Beadle dove to his right to smother for the save, his fifth of the night. Indiana out-shot the Wildcats 12-3 in the second half, with none of Kentucky's looks on frame.
Freshman midfielder Jacob Bushue was inches away from ending the game in the 94th minute as his header off a throw-in from Kotlov narrowly missed sneaking in the back post.
Luck was on the Hoosiers' side in the final 15 seconds when the Wildcats' Josh Albers missed on a tap-in from 2 yards out after Soffner had come out for the save and the ball rebounded out to Albers. Soffner finished with two saves on the night as the Wildcats managed to put just three shots on frame.
The Hoosiers look to retain their Big Ten lead this Sunday as they travel to East Lansing, Mich. to take on the Michigan State Spartans at 1 p.m. ET. Indiana is the only remaining undefeated conference team at 2-0-1, while MSU enters the match with a 2-2 Big Ten record. Audio of the match will be streamed live on IUHoosiers.com.
