BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University volleyball team (16-5, 4-5) notched their second win over a top-15 opponent this season, crushing the 13th-ranked Michigan Wolverines (18-3, 7-2) in impressive fasion, sweeping Big Blue by scores of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-21. The Hoosiers out-hit Michigan .383 to .092 in the lopsided affair.
"I have to be honest, after this week of (poor) practice I was a little worried heading into tonight," said Head Coach Sherry Dunbar. "The girls completely turned it around tonight though, and executed well. These are the types of wins that the NCAA selection committee will notice.
"It's a good night to be Hoosier, no doubt, but it doesn't get any easier tomorrow night with a very athletic Michigan State team coming to U-Gym. We better be ready to play or we won't win, it's that simply in this league."
Indiana setters Mary Chaudoin and Whitney Granado steered a diverse offensive assault Friday night, spreading out 38 assists to six different attackers, including five Hoosiers with five or more kills. Jordan Haverly was the top combatant, putting away a match-high 14 kills while swinging at a .316 clip (14-2-38).
A stellar blocking effort by the Cream and Crimson was also key in obtaining the victory. Indiana tallied 12 stuffs compared to just a pair for the Wolverines. Senior captain Taylor Wittmer rejected one UM attack solo to go along with six block assists. Chaudoin and Ashley Benson were a force at the net as well, recording six and five blocks, respectively.
Indiana had a stifling defensive performance, limiting Michigan to a .092 hitting efficiency. All-American setter Lexi Zimmerman managed just 23 assists while one of the conference's most potent attackers, Alex Hunt, just stayed out of the red with her .000 hitting percentage (8-8-32).
An errant attack attempt by Hunt handed IU the first point of the night, and the Hoosiers took advantage by never trailing in either of the first two sets. Michigan's biggest set lead of the night came at 12-10 in the third frame, one of only two multiple-point leads for the Wolverines all evening. Indiana snagged seven of the final 10 points to secure a 25-21 set triumph, and earn the 3-0 sweep over #13 Michigan.
Indiana is back at it Saturday night as the Big Ten Network broadcasts the 8 p.m. contest versus Michigan State held in University Gym.
