CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - Illinois quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase passed for two touchdowns and the Fighting Illini returned interceptions for two more Saturday in a 43-13 win over Indiana.
UI (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten) led 27-10 at the half and held on through a sloppy, mostly defensive second half.
Indiana scored on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Ben Chappell to Ted Bolser and a pair of Mitch Ewald field goals. Bolser's touchdown was his fifth of the season, setting an IU record for single-season touchdowns by a tight end. He finished the game with four catches for 77 yards.
Ewald is 8-of-9 on the season and has connected on all 21 extra-point attempts. After missing his first field goal attempt of the year, he has hit eight straight, which is tied for the third-longest streak in school history.
Lineman Justin Staples forced a fumble in the second quarter that led to Scheelhaase's touchdown pass to Jarred Fayson. Minutes later, Staples hit Chappell to force an interception that Patrick Nixon-Youman returned 68 yards for another and a 24-10 lead.
Jonathan Brown picked Dusty Kiel late for a 75-yard touchdown.
Chappell finished 26-48 with 279 yards for Indiana (4-3, 0-3) with a touchdown and three interceptions.
Jeff Thomas led the Hoosiers in tackles with a career-high 13, including a pair of assisted tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Tyler Replogle finished with nine tackles, half a tackle for loss and a quarterback hurry. Mick Mentzer contributed a career-high five tackles in the game.
Up next, Indiana returns home to face Northwestern on Saturday, Oct. 30. Kickoff is set for noon EDT.
