BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The three-time defending national champion Penn State Nittany Lions (18-4, 8-3) ran their Big Ten home winning streak to 85 matches Friday night, downing the Hoosiers (17-6, 5-6) in three sets (25-17, 25-18, 25-22). Indiana defeated PSU earlier this season for the first time in program history.
Indiana held a lead in each of the three sets, including a five-point advantage at the 19-14 mark of the third frame. But in the end, Penn State's offensive attack was running on all cylinders, hitting at a .395 clip for the match.
For the Hoosiers, Ashley Benson and Kelci Marschall each swung well, attacking .412 (10-2-19) and .700 (8-1-10), respectively.
The first two sets were very similar in that Hoosiers led towards the middle of the frame before watching it slip away down the stretch. In the opening set, IU led held a one-point advantage at 10-9 when a four-point run by the Nittany Lions put them ahead for good. In the second stanza, Indiana held an 11-10 lead before PSU went on a similar run to jump ahead.
Indiana's best effort came in the third and final set. The Hoosiers led by five points as late as 19-14. That is when Penn State's Blair Brown went off, however, leading her squad to seven of the next nine points, including five coming via kills from her right arm. Despite the PSU outburst, the score was still knotted at 22-all moments later. Arielle Wilson put the match on her shoulders at that point, earning responsibility for the final three points with two kills and a block assist to push PSU to a 25-22 match-clincher.
