MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Indiana University volleyball team (12-4, 0-4) were on the wrong end of a 3-0 score Sunday after, falling to the !7th-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers (13-3, 3-1) by scores of 25-19, 25-21, 25-20.
Sophomore right-side Kelci Marschall hit an even .300 (10-4-20) while fellow sophomore Jordan Haverly connected on a team-high 12 kills. Defensively, Caitlin Cox and Taylor Wittmer paced the Hoosiers with 10 digs and two blocks, respectively.
Haverly and Marschall each put away four kills in the opening set, and the Hoosiers hit a respectable .207 as a team. Minnesota's offense blew through the Hoosier defense, however, swinging at a .423 pace as IU recorded just seven digs and zero blocks.
Set number two was tight for much of the early goings, tied as late as 15-15. Jade Henderson's right arm was red-hot, blasting four kills during the first half of the second set. A second Hoosier offensive weapon never emerged though as the Gophers pulled away for the 25-21 winning tally.
Indiana continued to battled in the third frame, crawling out of a six-point deficit at 12-6; and cutting the Minnesota lead to a lone point at 20-19. That is as close as Indiana would get, however, as the Gophers grabbed five of the next six points to seal the deal.
The Cream and Crimson hosts a pair of home matches next weekend, welcoming Ohio State and Penn State to University Gym on back-to-back night (Oct. 8-9).
