BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - In a match where the Hoosiers finished with 21 shots, 12 of which were on goal, the Indiana men's soccer team found the back of the net to be the hardest target in a 1-1 tie win Wisconsin in a Big Ten matchup Sunday evening on Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
Indiana is now 5-3-1 on the year and 1-0-1 in Big Ten play, while Wisconsin is 1-6-2 and 0-0-1 in conference action.
The Hoosiers finished with a commanding 21-7 shot advantage and took seven corner kicks to the Badgers' three. Wisconsin was forced to make 11 saves, while IU tallied just a single save on the night.
The Badgers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when freshman Chris Prince scored his first goal of the season. The goal came off a set piece as Kyle McCrudden played the ball into the box and Nick Janus flicked the ball on to Price who sent a slip header past IU goalkeeper Luis Soffner for the score.
The Hoosiers had their early chances, beginning with a free kick from senior Andy Adlard that strayed wide left 1:55 into the match. Eleven minutes in it was junior Chris Estridge who played a ball from senior Daniel Kelly that ended up right in the arms of Wisconsin goalkeeper Ryan Vint. Less than a minute later, Estridge was back in front of the Wisconsin goal again, but Vint came up with the save.
The Badgers went into the halftime break holding their 1-0 lead despite being outshot 9-2 in the first frame. Indiana struck quickly in the second half with the tying goal from freshman Harrison Petts at 51:30. Estridge, who had been active from his midfield position all evening, played a ball from the right side to a streaking Petts who was making his way down the left flank. Petts maneuvered around the Wisconsin defenders and sent a shot into the lower right for his second goal of the season.
"We have been working on getting the ball into tight spaces," Petts said. "Chris fed a great ball through to me and I was lucky to get on the end of it and put it in."
Over the next 10 minutes Indiana unleashed an offensive barrage at Wisconsin but were unable to come up with a finish. in the 55th minute Estridge broke free on the right side but sent a low, rolling shot wide left. In the 58th minute, junior forward Will Bruin unleashed a liner that bounced off Vint but remained out of harms way.
In the 66th minute, Bruin took a shot on the run that Vint was just able to tip over the crossbar. On the ensuing corner kick, Bruin got his head on Adlard's service but again Vint was able to flick the ball over the crossbar. With 8:20 to play, Petts played a ball into Bruin on the far post but his sliding attempt was just off the mark. Petts nearly had the game-winning score in the 89th minute when his curling shot seemed to fool Vint, but the goalkeeper managed to twist to his right and haul in the shot, falling backwards but keeping the ball in front of the goal line.
"We just couldn't finish the chances we had," Petts said. "But I thought our defense played great. We didn't give them much."
Indiana's best opportunity in overtime came 19 seconds into the first OT period when Bruin broke free but his shot bounced wide right.
"I am proud that we didn't let things frustrate us and that we kept our shape," said head coach Todd Yeagley. "Our final pass was a bit off and I thought we were a little rushed when we got around the goal. I am disappointed we didn't put that second goal away, but I am proud we didn't lose our composure in a game where that could have happened.
"We need to start scoring some restart goals, too. We have been stressing that in practice, but we need to do even more."
The Hoosiers wrap up a three-match homestand with regional rival Notre Dame on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. ET.
