COLUMBUS, Ohio - In a battle of two teams receiving substantial votes in the latest top-25 coaches poll, the Indiana volleyball squad (17-7, 5-7) fell short in four-set defeat to the Ohio State Buckeyes (18-7, 6-6). The Hoosiers took the opening set 25-21 before watching OSU seized the next three 25-20, 26-24, 25-23.
Head Coach Sherry Dunbar was forced to call a timeout at the 16-16 mark of the first set after Ohio State went on a run to tie the score. Her Hoosiers responded to the break in action by snagging the next five points to go ahead 21-16. Senior captain Taylor Wittmer was the key cog for Indiana, picking up two blocks and a kill during that five-point stretch.
While Wittmer took care of the defense in the front court with three blocks, it was a complete team effort in the backcourt as eight different Hoosiers dug at least one ball. Ashley Benson and Jordan Haverly provided much of the offense, each terminating four kills in the 25-21 opener.
For the match, a trio of Hoosiers posted double-digits in kills while a different trifecta did so for digs. Haverly (15) Benson (12) and Marschall (11) were the top attackers. Meanwhile, Caitlin Cox (15) Caitlin Hansen (12) and Whitney Granado dug the most balls.
With eight matches remaining in the regular season, next weekend is an important one for the Cream and Crimson. Nationally-ranked Minnesota and the Iowa Hawkeyes are slated for visits to University Gym. Both the Friday night fight with the Gophers and Saturday evening showdown with Iowa are scheduled for 7 pm first serves.
