BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University volleyball team (13-4, 1-4) picked up their first conference victory, and it was a big one as the Hoosiers defeated Ohio State. The Buckeyes (14-4, 2-3) came into the match ranked 29th nationally. Indiana took sets one, three and four to secure a 3-1 winning tally (25-21, 12-25, 25-20, 25-20).
Senior captain Taylor Wittmer was nearly flawless, posting nine kills on 20 errorless swings for a .450 hitting efficiency. The Loogootee, Ind., native also contributed a team-high four blocks to the winning effort. Sophomore outside hitter Ivie Obeime came off the bench and provided a huge offensive spark, blasting eight kills while hitting .385. The other outside hitter, Jordan Haverly, swung well also with 14 kills to lead the Cream and Crimson.
Wittmer's co-captain, Caitlin Cox, dug up 20 balls on the night, good for a 5.0 digs per set average.
Indiana out-scored the Buckeyes by a combined score of 75-61 in the three winning sets, hitting at a .400-plus clip in the final two frames.
Kelci Marschall got the party started in set number one, putting away four of five attacks for an .800 hitting percentage. Cox was a monster in the back row, keeping alive nine digs in the opening set. The Hoosiers out-dug OSU by five and came away with the 25-21 winner, ending with a, what else, Marschall kill.
The second stanza was a disaster for Indiana, hitting at a sub-.000 pace and heading into the locker room tied at one-set-apiece.
Obeime was inserted into the line-up full-time after the intermission and immediately paid dividends for Head Coach Sherry Dunbar. Obeime posted identical stat lines in the final two sets, hitting .500 with four kills on six swings with just one error. Meanwhile, the rest of the bunch came out firing as well in the third set. Haverly, Wittmer, Benson and Mary Chaudoin each tallied multiple kills with no errors as the team hit .486 (19-2-35) en route to the 25-20 triumph.
The Hoosier offensive attack dipped ever so slightly in set number four, falling just .03 percentage points to .483. Indiana crushed 15 kills in the match-clinching set. With the score knotted at 14-14, IU seperated with a five-point run to go ahead 19-15 and never looked back in the 25-20 final score.
The Cream and Crimson are back at Saturday night, hosting the three-time defending national champion Nittany Lions of Penn State in a 7 p.m. match at University Gym. A live audio broadcast of the contest will be available at IUHoosiers.com as Dave Leno provides the play-by-play.
