Indiana Falls Short to Memphis, 80-71

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana fell to Memphis on Thursday, Nov. 18 as the Tigers outlasted the Hoosiers (2-1) in an 80-71 victory. Senior All-America candidate Jori Davis led the way for IU nearly missing a double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds, while senior Hope Elam and sophomore Aulani Sinclair added 17, which is a new career-high for Sinclair.
Indiana began the first half jumping out to a 10-4 lead on Sinclair's 3-point field goal at the 17:17 mark. The Hoosiers would later extend their advantage to their biggest lead of the game when senior Andrea McGuirt connected from beyond the arc at the 10:45 to make the score 21-14. IU's hot shooting from 3-point range continued the entire first half as the Hoosiers connected on 7-of-12 3's and went into the locker room with a 33-30 advantage.
The fast-paced second half began with Memphis (2-1) coming out strong to take its first lead of the game at 42-41 with a three from Alex Winchell with 15:50 remaining. Indiana battled back quickly to regain the lead 47-45 on an Elam layup with 14:14 left in the game. The Tigers would regain the lead at the 12:40 mark and the game remained close with IU cutting the lead to four with 1:20 remaining before Memphis put the game away in the final minute.
"We got better today ... I like our chances now. I like the fact that we've done some things that I have not seen us do in a long time," said head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "The in-and-out game was there tonight that wasn't there last week. We hit some unbelievable shots. Our goal is to do a better job on the boards."
The Hoosiers shot 41 percent (29-of-70) from the field, while Memphis edged Indiana 44-39 on the boards.
Senior Whitney Lindsay passed for nine assists and set a career-high in steals with six, while freshman Simone Deloach grabbed a career-high 8 rebounds in the effort.
Indiana returns to the hardwood on Sunday afternoon on the road against Georgia. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the game can be heard on the radio on WHCC 105.1.
Game Notes
- Senior All-America candidate Jori Davis scored a season-high 20 points and just missed a double-double with nine boards. She also added a season-high six assists and tied her season best in steals with three.
- Senior Whitney Lindsay set a career-high in steals with six against the Tigers, which passes her previous mark of five against UT-Martin on Dec. 9, 2009. It's the first time a Hoosier has had six or more steals since Kim Roberson stole six against Purdue on March 6, 2009.
- Sophomore Aulani Sinclair scored a career-high 17 points, which eclipses her previous mark of 16 points which she had against Purdue on December 31, 2009.
- Freshman Simone Deloach grabbed a career-high eight rebounds in the effort beating her previous mark of five in the season opener at Ball State on November 12.
