Hoosiers Finish Seventh at NCAAs, Best IU Finish Since 1977

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana men's cross country team earned the program's best finish in 33 years at the NCAA Championships on Monday, taking seventh place. Andrew Poore earned All-America honors with 38th place. He is IU's 25th All- American and the first since 2006.
The Hoosiers finished with score of 298, just 17 points away from Oklahoma in fifth place. The Hoosiers finished in the top 10 for the first time since 1987 and the best an IU team has since the 1977 squad took fourth.
Indiana director and head coach Ron Helmer said his team was very successful on the day and took a step in the right direction.
"I thought they ran really well," Helmer said. "They finally understood what it takes in this meet to be successful and executed the race plan to make that happen. They never panicked although we were back a little further than I would've liked early on. They just kept moving. I couldn't be happier."
Poore improved on a 137th-place finish in 2009 to earn All-America honors. He finished in 30:28.4, just 10 seconds behind Big Ten Champion Landon Peacock in 21st place. The Indianapolis-native is the first All-American for IU in men's cross country since Jordan Kyle in 2006.
Poore was followed in by Andy Bayer in 67th in 30:46.7. Ben Hubers was right in 69th (30:50.3). Zach Mayhew took 78th in 30:56.8, and De'Sean Turner wrapped up the IU top five in 105th (31:13.4).
