COLUMBUS, Ohio - A late comeback effort was not enough as Indiana dropped its regular-season finale by a 1-0 score at Ohio State Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
With the loss Indiana finished the regular season at 9-6-2, and 4-1-1 in Big Ten play. Ohio State improved to 10-5-2 and 4-2-0 in conference action.
In the 11th minute Alec Purdie stole the ball at midfield and took it out left before attempting a shot across the goal mouth that was smothered by OSU goalkeeper Matt Lampson. About a minute later Joe Tolen found Will Bruin in front of the net but Bruin was deemed to be offsides.
Goalkeeper Luis Soffner tallied his first save of the day on a free kick from Konrad Warzycha from 25 yards out.
The only score of the day came in the 27th minute when Austin McAnena was credited with a goal on a ball that bounced off an Indiana defender and into the net. That was one of eight Ohio State shot in the first half as Indiana was limited to just a single shot in the first 45 minutes.
Indiana was forced to juggle its lineup as injuries took their toll early on. Right back Daniel Kelly played just three minutes before having to be taken out with a foot injury and did not return. Defender Rich Balchan missed the final two minutes of the first half after a mid-air collision left him with a cut over his eye that required medical attention. Balchan did return midway through the second half and was a major catalyst for the Hoosiers after moving up into the midfield.
It was another slow start to the second half for IU but something seemed to click during a brief television timeout as the Hoosiers came out firing for the final 21 minutes of action. With 19 minutes remaining Balchan played a thru ball to Bruin whose shot was cleared over the goal line by OSU's Sage Gardner. On the ensuing corner kick, Andy Adlard sent in a ball that Bruin headed just high.
At 15:58 remaining, Indiana was awarded a free kick just outside the right side of the box. Adlard sent in a ball to the far post that went untouched by OSU, leaving sophomore defender Caleb Konstanski wide open. His header caught Lampson out of position, but the shot clanged off the cross bar. Just over two minutes later, sophomore Joe Tolen weaved his way through the middle of the field and got the ball into a streaking Bruin. Lampson came out to make the spectacular save, keeping the Hoosiers off the board.
With under 10 minutes remaining, Bruin again broke free on a ball from Adlard and this time caught Lampson out of position. The junior's shot spun wide left of the goal as Indiana made a last-ditch effort to tie the score.
