BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- Indiana won the battle of the boards and shot a season-high 89.3 percent from the line, but 11th-ranked Michigan State, thanks to 14 points from Draymond Green and 13 from Kalin Lucas, defeated the Hoosiers, 72-58, on Tuesday night.
"That's the best passing team we have played and they made some other tough shots," said IU Coach Tom Crean. "In my mind we were threatening and in the team's mind they were threatening. Every time we did, they made a big play."
The Hoosiers were led by sophomore Verdell Jones III who finished with a game-high 20 points and made 11 of 12 from the line. He is averaging a team-high 17.5 points per game in league play, which ranks sixth in the conference.
As a team, the Hoosiers made 25 of 28 of their charity tosses.
Freshman Christian Watford, had 14 points and six rebounds. He leads Big Ten freshman in scoring, averaging 12.7 points per game.
"We did some positive things, obviously," said IU Coach Tom Crean. "You outrebound a team like that, I think that is a positive. We were 25-of-28 from the foul line. We were able to drive the ball. This completes five games in a 12-day stretch against four ranked teams. We will continue to learn from it. We will continue to work hard and we will continue to help our guys get better."
The Hoosiers will go on the road for a Saturday night road game against Minnesota. Tip-off is at 8 p.m. Eastern and the game will air on the Big Ten Network.
