BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana rowing team claimed their first Dale England Cup with a final score of 101 points after the Hoosiers' second Varsity 8 beat Boston University to secure the title. IU played host to BU, Central Florida, Dayton and the University of Miami (Fla.) in a two-day event that included head-to-head, 2,000-meter races on Lake Lemon at Riddle Point Park in Bloomington, Ind.
Boston University finished second with a score of 93 points, while Central Florida placed third with a score of 90 points. Miami finished fourth with 31 points and Dayton placed fifth with 26 points.
This year's Dale England Cup will be tape-delayed on the Big Ten Network on Sunday, April 25 at 1 p.m. ET.
In the morning session which was full of rain and slight wind, the Hoosiers first Varsity 8 crew, made up of sophomore coxswain Alex Burkle, sophomores Shifumi Terasaka, Cara Donley and Andrea Wensits, juniors Ellie Benson and Rachel Anderson, and seniors Katie Liston, Katie Feckler and Emily Kasavana, crossed the finish line in 6:39.7, beating Central Florida by a little more than three seconds. The Golden Knights finished in 6:43.2. In the second Varsity 8 race, Indiana topped UCF (6:55.6) by nearly five seconds with a time of 6:50.1.
In the afternoon session where the rain stopped after the first two races, IU's first Varsity 8 crew just missed beating Boston by a second and a half. The Hoosiers crossed the finish line in 6:45.8, behind BU (6:44.3) after fighting back from being down early in the race. The second Varsity 8 crew helped secure the Dale England Cup title with nearly a 10 second win over Boston. Indiana finished in 6:58.9 to BU's 7:09.9.
"I was really excited about how we fought back in that last race," said IU head coach Steve Peterson. "Basically, we have been working on the second half of the race and the big thing that they really discovered is that when they are on the same page working together, they can fly. And that's what we saw today in that race. Being down to BU by a full length and then reeling them in to lose by a seat, it stinks to lose, but I think they learned a great lesson.
"Conditions were tough similar to yesterday, and I think the biggest thing was being able to adapt on the fly," said Peterson. "That's what I saw. In varying conditions, if you have a crew that can adapt to the conditions quickly like that, you're going to be successful. That's what we're seeing and we're pleased with the direction we're headed."
The morning session also saw IU's Novice 8 crew defeat Central Florida by 10 seconds, crossing the finish line in 6:55.9. UCF finished in 7:06.0. The second Novice 8 finished in 8:00.6 behind Miami (7:55.4). The Hoosiers' first Varsity 4 crew record a time of 8:01.2, falling to Central Florida, who finished in 7:46.1. The Hoosiers' second Varsity 4 crew recorded a time of 8:01.6, behind Boston (1st, 7:40.5) and Dayton (2nd, 7:51.6).
In the Novice 8 races in the afternoon, IU's first Novice crew raced its second, winning with a time of 7:10.6. In the first Varsity 4 race, the Hoosiers finished with a time of 8:07.6 behind Boston (7:57.5), while the second Varsity 4 crew recorded a time of 8:00.2, behind UCF (1st, 7:37.9) and Dayton (2nd, 7:51.5).
The Hoosiers return to Lake Lemon on Saturday, April 10, when they will host the Big Ten Double Dual with No. 7 Michigan State, No. 10 Michigan and No. 12 Ohio State at Riddle Point Park in Bloomington.
"I think the biggest thing for next weekend is confidence," Peterson added. "This is just another race where we are starting to realize that we are as fast as these teams and with three crews coming in that are all top-10 teams, that's going to be another big hurdle to go after. But I think if we can race the way we did here, we're going to be right with them. The thing we're trying to focus on is going as fast as we can and let the results take care of themselves."
