ATLANTA, Ga. - The Indiana University volleyball team started the 2010 season with a five-set road victory at Georgia Tech (25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 20-25, 18-16). The Hoosiers witnessed a two-set lead disappear before bouncing back and snagging an 18-16 fifth set. Georgia Tech received 13 votes in the preseason poll, slotting them 43rd nationally.
Senior Ashley Benson was Indiana's top offensive performer with 18 kills, a .324 hitting efficiency and two service aces. She shined defensively as well, recording a match-high eight blocks. Speaking of defense, junior libero Caitlin Cox got her season started on the right foot with 18 digs.
Jordan Haverly and Laura Matula also put up some double digits, posting 14 kills and 11 digs, respectively. Mary Chaudoin handled the setting duties solo, picking up 44 assists on the nights.
Indiana opened a two-sets-to-none lead heading into the intermission with a pair of 25-20 winning tallies. The Yellow Jackets, in front of a packed house at O'Keefe Gymnasium, battled back, however, to force a fifth set.
Georgia Tech kept it rolling early on in the fifth frame, jumping out in front, 3-0. The Yellow Jackets went ahead by as much as four points at 7-3 and led by three tallies as late as 12-9. Georgia Tech even garnered a match point leading 15-14.
But in the end, none of that mattered as the Hoosiers refused to lose and faced the adversity splendidly. Indiana quickly turned the 12-9 deficit into a match point opportunity at 14-13. Following back-to-back points for GT, Benson fended off the match point with a big-time swing for the kill. The Hoosiers then finished off the remarkable, 18-16, triumph by grabbing the final two points.
The Hoosiers are set for two more matches while down in Atlanta, facing UAB at 10:30 a.m. and Alabama A&M at 4:30 p.m. Be sure to tune into IUHoosiers.com and follow along as Dave Leno provides the play-by-play.
