AMHERST, Mass. - Goals from Will Bruin and Andy Adlard and some lucky bounces in the Hoosiers' favor resulted in a 2-1 road win for No. 24 Indiana at UMass on Sunday afternoon. With the win Indiana improves to 3-3, while UMass fals to 1-2-2.
Indiana took a 1-0 lead at 50:10 when Bruin he beat the goalkeeper 1-on-1 for his fifth goal of the season. It was his second shot of the game, both of which were on frame. Jacob Bushue and Tim Wylie were credited with the assist on the play, the first points of the season for both players. It also marks the first career points for the freshman Bushue and redshirt sophomore Wylie.
The Minutemen tied things up at 1-1 at 55:42 with a score from Hellah Sidibe on a defensive breakdown by the Hoosiers. Sidibe was left open on the right and shot across the goal into the lower left for the score.
Adlard put the Hoosiers back on top 2-1 at 63:16, scoring his fourth goal of the season and his second on the weekend. Adlard continued to track the ball after it deflected off a UMass player and when the goalkeeper came out and missed the ball the senior calmly slotted it into the lower right.
It was Adlard's third game-winning goal of the season. Ten of his 15 career goals have been game winners.
Clinging to a 2-1 lead and under nine minutes left in the second half, Harrison Petts broke free on the right and unleashed a liner from 25 yards out that bounced off UMass goalkeeper Chris Piekos. The Hoosiers averted near disaster when Andrew Henshaw hit the right post with 15 seconds left to play. Hoosier goalkeeper Luis Soffner also stopped a ball right on the line late in the second half.
Bruin came out early in the second half and played a nice cross to Harrison Petts, who tracked his header wide right. About a minute later Adlard had a free kick from 25 yards out on the right side but Piekos was able to grab the ball before Bruin could get his head on it.
The teams combined for just one shot in the first 25 minutes, a slow roller from Chris Estridge that was easily saved by Piekos. With a lot of congestion in the midfield neither team was able to build up a sustained attack on the goal. Indiana managed to get a couple of balls over the top but the timing was just off with the attacking player.
The Minutemen's first shot came with 16:40 to play in the first half and it was a dangerous one as Chris Roswess hit a line drive that goalkeeper Luis Soffner was forced to punch over the crossbar. Tim Wylie came on with under 10 minutes to play in the first half to spell Bruin, who had one shot in the half.
Rich Balchan led Indiana with two shots at the halftime break, including one at the horn that was low and hard but trailed off to the left. Petts and Bruin also had one shot each.
Indiana wraps up its five-game road swing on Friday, Sept. 24 when it travels to State College, Pa. for its Big Ten season opener against Penn State. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Jeffrey Field.
