EVANSTON, Ill. - The Indiana University volleyball team falls to 12-2 on the season after dropping a 3-1 decision at Northwestern (21-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-23). Meanwhile, the Wildcats improve to 11-1 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten.
A trio of Hoosiers gathered 14 or more kills with Ashley Benson and Jordan Haverly hammering a team-high 15 apiece. Kelci Marschall was Indiana's most productive attacker in terms of efficiency, however, blasting 14 kills at a .343 pace. Defensively, Caitlin Cox dug up 20 balls while Benson tallied five rejections at the net.
The superb play of Haverly, an Illinois native, pushed the Hoosiers to a 25-21 opening-set victory. Playing in front of a good number of friends and family, Haverly began her double-double night (15 kills, 12 digs) with five put-aways and four digs in the first set. The Hoosiers excelled from the service line as the team recorded three aces compared to zero service aces. Melanie Hicks was responsible for a pair of those aces. In fact, her second bullet from the baseline clinched the set triumph, acing Northwestern's Madalyn Shalter for the 25th point.
Indiana held the lead just twice during the next two sets as the Wildcats jumped ahead by a set. Set number four was much tighter as IU owned a four-point lead three times at 7-3, 11-7, and 15-11. From there, NU outscored the Hoosiers 14-8 down the stretch to take the third and match-clinching set.
The Cream and Crimson are back on the road next weekend, heading north to Iowa Friday night before a Sunday afternoon meeting with Minnesota.
