BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - A goal in the 30th minute from junior forward Will Bruin turned out to be all the offense the Indiana men's soccer team needed as it squeaked out a 1-0 win over in-state foe Evansville Wednesday night on Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
Indiana improves to 5-3-0 with the victory, while Evansville falls to 4-4-1. The Hoosiers are now 23-4-3 all-time against the Purple Aces, including 12-0-1 in the last 13 meetings.
"We were pleased to get the shutout, and there were some positives tonight, but we have told the team it is important to win games and play well," said head coach Todd Yeagley. "Tonight was not our top performance; not even close. But, we will take it, address the issues and move on. We need to put this performance behind us quickly and move on to get ready for Wisconsin on Sunday."
The Hoosiers lone goal came at 29:58 when Bruin powered home a shot from 25 yards out for his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Harrison Petts and Daniel Kelly set up the score, playing the ball into Bruin past the center circle as the reigning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week recorded his second game-winning goal in as many matches.
The Hoosiers were not at their sharpest Wednesday night, finishing with just nine shots, only three of which were on frame. Bruin had five of the nine attempts, including a ball that was cleared off the line by an Evansville defender just 2:32 into the match. Senior Andy Adlard's only attempt of the game nearly gave Indiana a 2-0 lead as his shot from 30 yards out in the 53rd minute curled just to the left of the goal.
IU goalkeeper Luis Soffner recorded his second shutout of the season, picking up two saves on the night. Evansville goalkeeper Phil Boerger had one save, with one team saved credited for the stop on Bruin's shot. Tad Kreamalmeyer led the Evansville offense with five shots, while Tom Irvin had two attempts.
The Hoosiers continue a three-match homestand this Sunday when it plays host to Big Ten foe Wisconsin on Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium. Indiana is 1-0 in Big Ten play, while this will serve as the conference opener for the Badgers. The match is set for 5 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network. In addition, the first 1,000 fans will receive an IU soccer scarf.
