BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Friday night was a quick one for IU Volleyball, disposing of Arkansas State (2-2) in just over an hour (25-14, 25-13, 25-17). With the win, Indiana improves to 4-0 on the year with two more matches on the docket for Saturday to finish off the IU adidas Classic.
Senior middle blocker Ashley Benson crushed the RedWolves, racking up 14 kills while hitting at a sizzling pace of .722 (14-1-18). Junior libero Caitlin Cox herded 18 digs on the night, helping the Hoosiers limit A-State to a .079 hitting efficiency. Indiana's blocking also played a major role in stymeing the RedWolves attack, with four different Hoosiers recording four or more block assists. Benson was tops on the team with six rejections.
As a team, the IU offensive rolled to a .405 hitting percentage (40-8-79). Indiana's 12-ace total tied for the most ever in school history for a three-setter, happening for the third time (previously occurred in 1993 vs. Michigan State and 1992 vs. UL-Monroe). Defensively, the Cream and Crimson out-dug ASU by 14 while compiling nine more team blocks than the opposition.
Benson was flawless half-way through the second-set, connecting for the kill on each and every one of her first nine swings. Speaking of perfection, freshman Jade Henderson turned her only swing of the match into a kill, moving her career hitting total to 3-0-3 (1.000). Jordan Haverly and Cox were the brightest stars in set number two, posting six kills and nine digs, respectively.
Lindsey Enterline shined in the third set, picking up three kills on four swings.
