Hoosiers Drop Close Meet at Purdue, 161-139

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Indiana women's swimming and diving team came up short against an undefeated Purdue squad, falling 161-139 to the Boilermakers in a dual meet Saturday in West Lafayette, Ind.
The meet actually got underway on Friday night when the diving portion took place. The Hoosier women went 2-3-4 on the 1-meter springboard with Logan Kline second (291.90), Brittney Feldman third (280.50) and Gabby Agostino fourth (276.30). The team also competed on the platform with Agostino second (264.98), Laura Ryan fourth (259.65) and Kate Hillman fifth (256.35). That is a season-high score for Hillman.
In the pool, IU opened with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay with Taylor Wohrley, Bronwyn Pasloski, Brittany Barwegen and Sara Delay teaming up for a time of 1:43.53. The first individual event of the day was the 1,000 freestyle, with Lindsay Vrooman taking second in a time of 10:01.50, a season best for the freshman. Courey Schaefer was third in 10:14.77 (season best), with Nikki White fourth (10:22.40).
Brittany Strumbel and Margaux Farrell took the third and fourth spots in the 200 freestyle, with Strumbel posting an NCAA B cut time of 1:49.08 for third. Farrell was fourth in 1:49.90, with Stephanie Armstrong sixth (1:52.19-season best).
Wohrley led a 2-3-4 finish in the 100 backstroke for IU, posting a time of 55.20 for the runner-up spot. Ashley Jones was third (57.04) and Kim Tracey fourth (57.22). It was Pasloski taking second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.23, while Ashley Specht was fourth (1:04.35) and Katelyn Ishee seventh (1:07.15).
Barwegen gave Indiana its first victory of the day when she posted a time of 1:59.96 in the 200 butterfly. That is an NCAA B cut and the sixth-fastest time by a Hoosier this season. Allysa Vavra followed in second place at 2:00.97, marking the first time she has swum the event this season. Brenna MacLean was fourth (2:03.16).
Delay was the first Hoosier to touch the wall in the 50 freestyle with a mark of 23.58, the fifth-fastest time by an IU swimmer this season. Farrell was fifth (23.73) and Armstrong sixth (24.10). Strumbel took third in the 100 free at 51.60, with Farrell sixth (52.32) and Schaefer seventh (52.69).
Wohrley was victorious in the 200 backstroke for the third time this season with a time of 1:59.60). Ashley Jones took third in 2:00.32, and Tracey sixth (2:04.52). Vavra posted a runner-up time of 2:16.51 in the 200 breaststroke, while Pasloski was third (2:17.78) and Specht fourth (2:20.55).
Strumbel posted her third top-three finish of the day with a second-place showing in the 500 freestyle (4:53.99). Vrooman was fourth (4:56.17) and Schaefer fifth (4:57.75).
Barwegen made it a sweep of the butterfly events with a winning time of 55.45 in the 100 fly. MacLean was third in 56.36, with Wohrley sixth (57.87).
In the final individual event of the day, Vavra topped the field in the 200 individual medley with an NCAA B time of 2:01.64. Ashley Jones was third (2:06.04) and Tracey fourth (2:06.75).
The meet concluded with the 400 freestyle relay as Strumbel, Delay, Armstrong and Farrell took first in a time of 3:26.97.
With the 2011 Big Ten meet fast approaching, Indiana wraps up its dual meet schedule next Friday, Jan. 28, as it travels to Louisville, Ky. for a double dual meet with the Cardinals and Virginia Tech.
