IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Indiana volleyball team (8-9, 0-5) fell to Iowa (11-7, 1-4) in five sets (25-14, 20-25, 25-21, 16-25, 15-13) in a seesaw battle on Friday night in Iowa City.
Kelci Marschall led the Hoosiers in kills on her way to a double-double performance (22 kills, 14 digs). Ive Obeime added 15 kills and Samantha Thrower finished with 13 while hitting at a .345 percentage. Caitlin Cox had 20 digs to lead IU in the category.
In the first set, Iowa led the entire way, thanks to a .423 team hitting percentage en route to a 25-14 triumph. The Hoosiers bounced back in set two to even the match as IU's Marschall led the way with six kills at a .444 clip.
IU fought hard in the third set. Trailing 20-14, the Hoosiers clawed their way back into it cutting the Hawkeye lead to 22-21. However, Iowa rallied for three straight points to take the set and put the match back in the home team's favor. The fourth set was all Indiana as the Hoosiers led wire-to-wire to win, 25-16. Marschall was dominant with seven kills as Samantha Thrower added five while hitting .571.
The fifth and final match came down the wire. With the score knotted at 9-9, Iowa began seizing momentum with a kill followed by back-to-back errors by the Hoosiers to take a 12-9 advantage. But IU was resilient, facing a 13-10 deficit, Ivie Obeime connected on consecutive kills to make the score 13-12. But that was as close as IU would come as the Hawkeyes took the deciding set, 15-13.
Indiana will return to action on Saturday afternoon at No. 6 Nebraska. It will be IU's first Big Ten matchup with the Cornhuskers. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m. ET.
