Hoosiers Come Up Short Against Toledo

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana fell to Toledo at Assembly Hall on Friday night, 69-58, despite Aulani Sinclair's career-high 23 points to lead all scorers. IU's Georgie Jones accomplished her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds, but the Rockets held on to earn the road victory.
Toledo (3-1) jumped ahead in the early going to lead Indiana (2-3), 13-3, with 14:25 remaining in the first half. Indiana then went to work, hitting three-consecutive free throws to start. Jones then hit a layup followed by a Sinclair 3-point field goal to make the deficit just two points, 13-11.
Jasmine McGhee later found an open Sasha Chaplin for a lay in to tie the contest. McGhee then capped off Indiana's 12-0 run getting a pass from Andrea Newbauer for a layup to give the Hoosiers their first lead of the game, 15-13, with 7:42 on the clock.
IU held Toledo without a field goal for a 9:04 span during the first half, but the Rockets caught fire just before the half, outscoring Indiana 14-3 in the final minutes to take the lead into the break, 36-24.
Indiana continued to trail the Rockets to begin the second half, but thanks to Sinclair hitting a layup while being fouled and then converting the free throw for the old-fashioned three-point play, IU trailed by just seven, 46-39, with 11:59 remaining. The Hoosiers defended well on the next Toledo possession, but came up empty on their own offensive end and the Rockets took the lead back up to 10 with a 3-point field goal and the score, 49-39.
The Hoosiers again surged back into the game when Sinclair hit a baseline runner at the 9:26 mark to cut the deficit to six, 51-45. But just as they had done all night, the Rockets found away to get their back up to double-digits. It was too much to overcome as Toledo will travel home with a win.
Sinclair shot 8-of-10 from the field while accomplishing her career-best scoring game. The junior captain went 2-of-3 from 3-point range and was 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Jones not only had a double-double performance, but she also collected a career-high five steals. Newbauer also achieved a career-best in the steals category with six for the game.
The Hoosiesr forced 25 Toledo turnovers with a season-best 15 steals on the night, scoring 29 points off of those Rocket mistakes. Toledo won the rebounding battle, 41-33.
Indiana will next take on Virginia on the road as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Thursday, Dec. 1. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. ET from Charlottesville, Va.
Game Notes
• Junior captain Aulani Sinclair finished with a career-high 23 points while shooting 8-of-10 from the floor. Her eight field goals made is also a career-best for a single game. Sinclair shot 2-of-3 from long distance and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe, a career-best for free throws made in a game. She also had three rebounds and two steals.
• Georgie Jones achieved her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 boards. The senior captain also had a career-high five steals on the night.
• Indiana forced a season-best 25 turnovers tonight on the defensive end. It was the most turnovers forced by IU since forcing 27 Michigan State mistakes on Jan. 20, 2011.
• Andrea Newbauer set a career mark with six steals on the night, doubling her previous high of three against Murray State on Nov. 14. The sophomore also had six assists.
• The Hoosiers collected a season-high 15 steals for the game. The most for Indiana since IU had 16 steals vs. Michigan State on Jan. 20, 2011.
• Indiana scored 29 points off of Toledo turnovers, exactly half of the team's total point output. It was the most points scored off of opponents' mistakes so far this season.
• The starting lineup for Indiana was Aulani Sinclair, Georgie Jones, Andrea Newbauer, Sasha Chaplin and Jasmine McGhee.
