
Virginia Tops Indiana in Big Ten/ACC Challenge

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Indiana fell on the road at Virginia in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Thursday night, 65-49. Sasha Chaplin had her second double-double of the season with 10 points while tying a career-high with 15 rebounds. Aulani Sinclair led the team in scoring with 12 points.
Indiana (2-4) fell behind early and Virginia (6-2) took control of things in the first half. IU faced a 27-12 deficit after a Cavalier layup with 3:44 left until halftime. The Hoosiers then went to work. It started with Jasmine McGhee scoring five straight points on a couple of jumpers and free throw to cut the UVa lead to 10.
Candyce Ussery then nailed a 3-point bomb from the top of the key and the Hoosiers trailed by just seven, 27-20, with 1:55 on the clock. Aulani Sinclair followed with a long-range field goal of her own from beyond the arc. Then as time was ticking down to end the half, Sasha Chaplin grabbed an offensive rebound and put up a base line jumper as time expired to cap a 13-0 Indiana run in the final 3:35 of the opening stanza. The Hoosiers trailed by just two heading into the break, 27-25.
The Hoosiers opened the second half just as they closed the first, with a Chaplin field goal after an offensive rebound to tie the game for the first time, 27-27. Virginia then went on an 11-3 run to take its lead to eight, 38-30. IU responded quickly as Sinclair hit a 3-point field goal followed by a free throw on a later possession to pull within four, 38-34, with 13:35 remaining.
The Cavaliers again increased their lead scoring six-consecutive points to jump ahead by 10. Indiana tried to fight back cutting the deficit to single-digits at 50-42, but UVa closed the door outscoring IU 15-7 down the stretch to take the victory.
With Chaplin's double-double, the Hoosiers have had seven double-double performances on the year. Sinclair scored in double-figures for the fourth-consecutive game. The Hoosiers forced 24 Virginia turnovers while collecting 13 steals. The Cavaliers won the rebounding battle, 44-39, but IU topped UVa on the offensive glass, 18-11.
The Hoosiers will return home on Sunday, Dec. 4, to welcome the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. The game will tip at Noon ET at Assembly Hall.
Game Notes
• Aulani Sinclair scored in double-figures for the fourth-consecutive game finishing with 12 points. She also had three rebounds and an assist.
• Sasha Chaplin had her second double-double of the season with 10 points and a career-high tying 15 rebounds. Nine of those boards came on the offensive end. Chaplin also had five steals on the night, a new career-high.
• The Hoosiers forced 24 Virginia Turnovers. It is the second-straight game Indiana forced over 20 turnovers.
• IU had 13 steals on the night, making three games this season with 10 or more steals.
• The Hoosiers held Virginia to just 29.6 percent shooting in the first half. It marks the third time this season that Indiana has held an opponent to under 30-percent shooting for a half.
• Indiana went on a 13-0 run to end the first half in the final 3:35, then made it a 15-0 run scoring the first two points of the second half.
