INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana men's basketball team fell just short to Penn State, 61-55, in the first round of the 2011 Big Ten Tournament in Conseco Fieldhouse.
Christian Watford led the Hoosiers (12-20) with 15 points, shooting 6-of-11 from the field, to go along with four rebounds and one steal.
Down by seven early in the first half, the Hoosiers used a 13-0 run to take a 15-9 lead with 11:44 on the clock. Penn State answered with a 7-0 run to regain a 16-15 edge, but a 3-pointer from Matt Roth kept IU ahead, 18-16, with 8:57 to go. The rest of the first stanza was much of the same as the two teams traded the lead four times in the last four minutes. IU held a two-point lead with 39 seconds remaining in the half, but a free throw from Jeff Brooks followed by a tip-in just before the buzzer, sent the two teams into the break with the Nittany Lions leading, 28-27.
Penn State opened the second half with a three-point play from Brooks to take a 31-27 lead with 19:36 on the clock. However, the Hoosiers fought back on back-to-back baskets from Watford and Verdell Jones III to tie it up at 31-31, with 19:05 on the clock. Penn State regained the lead and went on to lead by as little at three en route to the 61-55 win.
The Hoosiers shot 48.9 percent (22-of-45) from the field on the game. Victor Oladipo led IU off the bench with eight points and a team-high six rebounds. He also tallied two assists and two steals in the effort.
