WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Indiana University baseball team (7-5) began the RussMatt Invitational with 3-0 defeat to the 2010 Mid-American Conference champion Central Michigan Chippewas (6-8). The Hoosiers are set to play seven more games while in the Sunshine State over Spring Break.
Indiana ran into a buzz saw in CMU's Trent Howard on Saturday afternoon. The Chippewa tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout. Senior catcher Wes Wilson smacked the first IU hit, raising his team-high batting average to .375. Micah Johnson was also able to connect on a single. Johnson pulled a shot over the first baseman's head on a two-strike count.
Hoosier hurler Blake Monar had an impressive day on the bump as well. He certainly pitched good enough to win, lasting 7.0 innings and allowing just one earned run with five strikeouts. A trio of IU defensive errors led to a pair of unearned runs on Monar's tab, however.
Freshman relievers Blair Betts and Reed Reznicek combined to pitch the eighth inning, putting two aboard but not allowing a run.
