Women Fall Short at Michigan, 151.5-148.5

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Indiana University women's swimming and diving team came up three points short of victory in a dual meet at Michigan on Saturday, falling 151.5-148.5.
The meet opened with the 200 medley relay as Allie Day, Bronwyn Pasloski, Kim Tracey and Courey Schaefer combined for a third-place finish in 1:44.12. Finishing fourth was the quartet of Taylor Wohrley, Ashley Specht, Justine Ress and Stephanie Armstrong (1:45.36).
Brittany Strumbel took second in the 1,000 freestyle with a season-best time of 9:58.50. Schaefer was fourth (10:18.41) and Nikki White sixth (10:23.08).
Margaux Farrell gave Indiana its first win of the day, taking the 200 free in 1:50.36. That led a 1-2 finish for IU with Lindsay Vrooman second (1:50.68). Lauren Jordan also placed in the top five, finishing fourth (1:51.89), as did Wohrley in fifth (1:51.98).
It was a 1-2-3 sweep for the Hoosiers in the 100 backstroke, led by a winning tie of 56.23 for Day. Ress was second (56.25) and Cynthia Pammett third (56.58). Specht was the top Hoosier finisher in the 100 breaststroke, placing fourth (1:05.10). Pasloski was fifth (1:05.12) and Afton Robertson sixth (1:05.82).
Allysa Vavra paced the Hoosiers in the 200 fly, finishing second in 2:01.44. Brenna MacLean was fourth (2:03.90).
In the diving well, Gabby Agostino was one of three top-four finishers for Indiana on the 1-meter springboard, placing tied for first with a score of 305.48. Laura Ryan was third (295.13) and Kate Hillman fourth (283.88).
On the 3-meter, Ryan took second 9354.90) with Agostino third (342.68) and Hillman fourth (286.13).
Farrell touched the wall second in the 50 freestyle (23.57), with Armstrong third (23.90) and Ress seventh (24.72). Farrell came back in the 100 free for her second win of the day, clocking a time of 50.67. Strumbel was third (51.43) and Schaefer fifth (53.05).
Day made it a sweep of the backstroke events, winning the 200 back in 2:01.05. Wohrley was second (2:01.42) and Pammett fourth (2:02.86). Vavra added another second-place finish with a time of 2:17.28 in the 200 breaststroke. Pasloski followed her in third (2:20.03).
Vrooman became the fourth Hoosier to win an event on the day with a time of 4:50.60 in the 500 freestyle. Strumbel was third (4:55.42) and Jordan sixth (4:58.03).
Armstrong was Indiana's top finisher in the 100 fly, taking fourth (57.17), with Day fifth (57.19).
Vavra continued her domination of the individual medley events, winning the 400 IM by more than five seconds with a time of 4:18.80. Dorina Szekeres was fourth (4:27.01) and Kim Tracey fifth (4:28.13).
In the final race of the day, Strumbel, Armstrong, Vrooman and Farrell combined to take the 400 free relay in a time of 3:23.62. That is the second-fastest time on the season for IU.
The Hoosiers are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 21 as they play host to rival Purdue at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. Diving begins at 10 a.m., with swimming events set to get underway at 11 a.m. The meet will be shown live on the Big Ten Network.
