IU, PSU and Virginia Complete Day 1 of Competition

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana opened its 2012-13 home schedule Friday with day one of a two-day tri-meet with Penn State and Virginia at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington.
The Hoosier men lead Virginia, 84-83 and Penn State, 87-80. Virginia leads the Nittany Lions, 94-73.
Daniel Kanorr, Tanner Kurz, Jacob Kelzor and John Winck placed fourth in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:24.82 to open the meet.
It was a tie in the men's 200-yard individual medley with Steve Schmuhl and Cody Miller posting identical times of 1:49.28. Eric Ress was fifth (1:51.26) and Sam Trahin ninth (1:52.15).
Jim Barbiere was the winner in the 500 freestyle, clocking in at 4:24.15. Nicholas Schwab placed eighth (4:34.61) and Ryan Downey 10th (4:38.48). Miller made it three wins in a row for IU, taking the 100 breaststroke in 55.20. Ian Boggs placed seventh (57.88) and Mike Hurley eighth (58.40).
Ress the winner in the 200 backstroke (1:45.68), followed by James Wells in ninth (1:51.52) and Brent Aarons 11th (1:57.70). Kanorr was sixth in the 100 freestyle (46.00), with Barbiere ninth (46.69).
Schmuhl took third in the 200 butterfly (1:50.38), with Trahin sixth (1:52.39) and Austin Saunders eighth (1:54.26).
On the 3-meter springboard, the Hoosiers finished 1-2 with Darian Schmidt posting a score of 378.40, followed by Casey Johnson (355.65). Mick Dell'Orco was fourth (333.55) and Mick Dell'Orco fifth (307.90).
Ress, Miller, Schmuhl and Kanorr closed day one with a second-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay, touching the wall in 3:17.96. The group of Wells, Tanner Kurz, Saudners and Barbiere was fifth (3:23.17).
The meet continues tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m. ET.
