LAS VEGAS - Indiana opened play at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic on Friday against Utah with a 7-2 loss to the Utes. Senior catcher Cassie Gogreve drove in both runs for the Hoosiers with a bases loaded single in the fourth inning.
Indiana committed a pair of errors and and was only able to put together four hits while Utah collected nine hits in the contest.
Utah took advantage of a couple mistakes in the field by Indiana (2-3) early in game to go ahead 2-0 after two innings of play. Then in the third inning, Utah (4-2) got a three-run home run from Whitney Holm to make it 5-0.
Then in the fourth inning, Kelsey Brannon led off with a single and Brianna Meyer reached on a infield single, followed by Jenna Abraham's bunt single to load the bases with no outs. The Utes got the first out of the inning on a force play at the plate and a strikeout set the table for Gogreve's two-out heroics. She worked the count full before lining a sharp single through the right side of the infield to make it 5-2.
But that would be as close as IU would get before Utah tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth inning to provide the final margin, 7-2.
Lora Olson (1-2) went the distance in the circle for Indiana, giving up seven runs (five earned) on nine hits while striking out three and walking a pair. It is her second complete game of the season.
The Hoosiers will play Long Beach State in their second game of the day in Las Vegas.
