IU Starts Strong at NCAA Championships

AUBURN, Ala. - Sophomore Lindsay Vrooman and senior Allysa Vavra were championship qualifiers to lead the Hoosiers on day one of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the James Martin Aquatic Center in Auburn, Ala.
After six events the Hoosiers are in 12th place with 32 points, 12 points out of the top 10. California leads the field with 132 points, followed by Stanford (118) and USC (118).
"This was a real successful start for us," said head coach Ray Looze. "It was probably our quickest start that I can remember, having two top-eight finishers in Lindsay Vrooman and Allysa Vavra. I am really proud of them for being able to get the job done in preliminaries.
"I couldn't asked for a much better start to this meet. Tomorrow will be key in coming back and doing another fantastic job in prelims."
Vrooman led the Hoosiers in the 500 freestyle with an eighth-place finish, coming in at 4:42.13. Vrooman picks up her first career All-America honor it back for after finishing 26th in the 500 free at last year's NCAA meet. She earned her spot in the championship final by going a career-best 4:38.65 in prelims. Senior Brittany Strumbel finished fourth in the consolation final and 12th overall with a time of 4:39.71. She posted a season-best time of 4:39.66 in prelims.
Senior Margaux Farrell was 29th with a time of 4:43.89, followed by senior Nikki White in 43rd (4:48.86), and freshman Lauren Jordan in 57th (4:53.42).
Vavra finished eighth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:56.60. Vavra qualified sixth for the championship final after posting a 1:55.58 in prelims That is the second-fastest time in school history. This is Vavra's first top-eight finish in the 200 IM at the NCAA meet after placing 11th a year ago.
The 400 medley relay team of Justine Ress, Ashley Specht, Brenna MacLean and Strumbel finished 17th with a time of 3:36.67.
Sophomore Laura Ryan is an All-American for the first time in her career, earning honorable mention honors after finishing 12th in the 1-meter springboard competition. Ryan finished with 307.55 points in the consolation final after tallying a score of 291.55 in prelims. Junior Amy Cozad finished 34th with a score of 254.75.
