BOISE, Idaho - Indiana's men's track and field team is in fifth place through six events at the NCAA Indoor Championships with 13 points. IU got a second-place finish from De'Sean Turner, Chris Vaughn, Danny Stockberger and Andy Bayer in the distance medley relay and a fourth-place finish in the 200 meters from Kind Butler, who clocked a school record in the event.
In the DMR, the Hoosiers took second place for the second straight year, clocking a time of 9:35.67 and finishing just .19 out of the win. The Hoosiers got a mile anchor of 3:58.87 from Bayer as he moved from sixth to second with the baton. Turner split 2:59.99 on the leadoff 1,200m leg, Vaughn ran 47.62 on the 400 leg and Stockberger ran 1:49.21 on the 800 leg to set up Bayer. Bayer and Stockberger each clocked the second-best times in the race on their respective legs. Indiana has earned All-America honors in the race for four straight years, with the second-place finish the past two years the best in school history.
Butler took fourth in the finals of the 200 in a time of 20.78, becoming IU's best ever NCAA finisher in the event. He clocked a time of 20.77 in the prelims, and both of his times on the day bettered the IU record that was held by Olympic Gold Medalist David Neville. Neville's sixth-place finish in 2006 was the previous best finish at NCAA Indoors by a Hoosier. Butler is an All-American for the second-straight season in the event after taking eighth a year ago. It is IU's fourth All-America certificate indoors in the event all-time, with Butler and Neville each having two to their credit. Butler also ran the 60 meters on the day, clocking a time of 6.68 to finish 19th. The time is just .01 off his own IU record at that distance.
Bayer started the day off with fourth place in his heat of the mile prelims, automatically qualifying for the finals. Bayer's time of 4:04.69 was the fourth fastest in the two preliminary heats.
Andrew Poore ran in the men's 5,000 meters, taking second team All-America honors in 14th place. He finished in 14.20.63.
