BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Ball State pulled out of Bloomington with a 41-39 win after kicking a game-winning field goal with one second remaining. The Hoosiers scored 14 points on two Nate Sudfeld led drives in the fourth quarter to take a 39-38 lead, before the field goal.
The Hoosiers rallied from a 14-3 first-half deficit to take a 25-24 halftime lead, then fell behind 38-25 late in the third quarter. Sudfeld, just the third true freshman quarterback to play in IU history, rallied the Hoosiers. He threw a 70-yard TD pass to Cody Latimer with 4:03 to go, and after getting the ball back with 1:42 left, took the Hoosiers 77 yards in six plays.
He capped the drive with 2-yard TD pass to wide receiver Shane Wynn with 49 seconds left in the game. Mitch Ewald converted the extra point to give the Hoosiers a one-point edge.
"Our guys were ready," Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson said. "We tackled well the first half. We had 12 penalties for 127 yards, defensive interferences, holdings, personal fouls - things that we have to get corrected. I'm very proud of our kids, I thought all along we played well. I thought we had played pretty well offensively. I appreciate the way they hung in there and battled."
Cameron Coffman made his first major college start at quarterback. He completed 24-of-35 passes for 251 yards and two TDs.
The Hoosiers gained 558 yards of total offense, topping 500 yards for the second straight game. IU got 102 yards and a touchdown from Stephen Houston on the ground and 115 yards and two touchdowns on four catches from Latimer.
Kofi Hughes caught a 9-yard touchdown from Coffman in the first quarter, and Latimer scored his first touchdown on a 3-yard pass from Coffman at the end of the half. IU scored a two-point conversion on that drive, a 1-yard plunge from Houston.
Ewald scored the first points of the game, making a 46-yard field goal, the 32nd made three-pointer of his career.
Hughes finished with 88 yards on seven catches. Receptions were made by 10 Hoosiers in the contest.
