BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's basketball team remains perfect to start the season after an 87-38 win over USC Upstate on Sunday afternoon in Assembly Hall. The 7-0 start is the team's best since reaching the same unbeaten mark in 2000-01.
Indiana (7-0) has now scored 80 points or more in six of its first seven games to start the season for the first time in program history.
Five players reached double figures on the day for the Hoosiers as 12 Hoosiers put points on the board in total.
The Hoosiers started slow, hitting just 2-for-8 from the field, before freshmen Larryn Brooks and Taylor Agler sunk consecutive 3-pointers to push Indiana to a 12-0 lead with 14:30 to play in the first half.
That lead would continue to grow to 21-0 as the Hoosier defense held Upstate scoreless until the 11:53 mark of the first half.
Brooks and Agler paced Indiana in the scoring column, finishing with 14 and 16 points, respectively.
For the second straight game, the Hoosiers reached the 50-point mark in a half as they took a 51-13 lead to the halftime locker room.
The Hoosiers shot 54.5 percent (18-of-33) in the first half, 7-of-15 from the 3-point line, capped off by an 18-0 run to end the half. Meanwhile, the defense limited Upstate (3-5) to just 20.7 percent (6-of-29) shooting.
Indiana center Sasha Chaplin hit a pair of jump shots and a free throw out of the break as the Hoosiers maintained their 38-point lead at the under-16 time out of the second half with a 61-23 lead.
The sixth-year senior finished with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting.
Redshirt sophomore Kaila Hulls accumulated six of her 12 total points in the second half, setting a new career high. All 12 points were scored from beyond the 3-point arc.
Indiana held a 80-36 advantage with 3:48 to play in the game and finished on a 7-2 run.
The Hoosiers next face Virginia Tech as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Dec. 4 at Assembly Hall at 7 p.m. ET.
Postgame Notes
• Indiana improved its record to 7-0 after defeating USC Upstate 87-38 in the first ever meeting between the two schools.
• IU's 7-0 start is the first perfect start through seven games since the beginning of the 2000-01 season.
• This is the seventh time in school history that a team has started a season 7-0.
• IU scored a season-high 87 points over USC Upstate marks the sixth time this season that IU has scored 80-plus points on an opponent. The last time Indiana had six 80-plus games was 2006-07. This marks the first time ever that IU has recorded 80-plus points in six of their first seven games.
• The 87 points scored by the Hoosiers are the most since Nov. 19, 2006, when IU tallied 98 points vs. Dayton.
• Indiana started the game on a 21-0 run while holding USC Upstate scoreless for the first 8:07. During that Spartan drought, the Hoosier defense held Upstate to 0-of-9 from the field and forced five turnovers.
• IU ended the first half on an 18-0 run in the final 5:02 and made it a 20-0 run with its first bucket of the second half.
• The 87-38 win is the largest margin of victory IU has recorded since a 90-34 win vs. Wofford on Nov. 22, 2002. This is the first time the Hoosiers have held an opponent to under 40 points this season.
