EAST LANSING, Mich. - Indiana struggled on the road Thursday night as Michigan State topped IU in the Breslin Center, 72-42. Linda Rubene set a career mark with 14 points as 10 Spartans scored in the game led by three in double figures.
The Spartans started things with an 8-2 run in the game's first 3:32. IU's Aulani Sinclair silenced that outburst with a layup and later a jumper to cut the deficit to 8-6. Linda Rubene then nailed a 3-pointer at the 13:40 mark to cap a 7-0 Indiana run to give the Hoosiers a 9-8 lead.
That lead was short lived as MSU responded with a 9-0 run of its own to take a 17-9 advantage with 9:54 on the clock. Nicole Bell halted that run for the Hoosiers with a long distance 3-point field goal to make it a five-point margin.
Michigan State's defense allowed the Spartans to score 10 points off of Hoosier turnovers in the first 20 minutes as MSU took a 31-17 lead into the locker room.
The Spartans began to take control in the second half as they jumped ahead 42-21 with 15:04 to play. Bell connected from beyond the arc before a Sinclair jumper to cut the deficit to 16 points, but MSU would score 11 consecutive points to put the game away.
Rubene scored her career high shooting 4-of-6 from the field, 1-of-1 from beyond the arc and 5-of-5 from the charity stripe.
The difference in the game was turnovers as IU committed 22 miscues as MSU had only seven.
Indiana will have a week off before hosting Purdue in Assembly Hall on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. ET.
