BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 38 Indiana women's tennis team took down the No. 53 Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday afternoon, 5-2. It gave IU its first Big Ten win of the season.
All three doubles matches were close throughout. Indiana's (12-5, 1-2) Leslie Hureau and Carolyn Chupa separated from OSU's (8-8, 1-3) Kelsey Dieters and Graine O'Neill to win the No. 1 match, 8-4. Alecia Kauss and Shannon Murdy of IU then followed suit at No. 2 and pulled away from Ohio State's Noelle Malley and Kara Cecil, 8-4, to take the team doubles point for the Hoosiers.
Sophie Garre and Katie Klyczek teamed together in the No. 3 match for IU and led early, but Ohio State's Fidan Manashirova and Gabby Steele came back to force a tiebreaker and then won over the Hoosier duo, 9-8 (4).
In singles, Chupa at No. 3 and Garre at No. 5 set the tone for the Hoosiers. Chupa cruised in her match over Kara Cecil, 6-0, 6-2. Garre finished shortly after giving up just one game in her two set triumph over O'Neill, 6-1, 6-0.
The No. 2 match would clinch it for Indiana, as Klyczek took down Ohio State's Fidan Manashirova in consecutive sets, 6-3, 6-3. Jithme Jayawickrema scored IU's final team point of the day with her No. 6 victory over Noelle Malley.
"The roller coaster ride continues," head coach Lin Loring said. "We put ourselves in a tough spot when we lost to Penn State Friday. When you consider Ohio State beat them 5-2, you realize what a big win this was. I'm really proud of the way the team bounced back today. Every player won singles or doubles or both. When that happens we are tough to beat."
Indiana will play on the road in each of the next two weekends beginning with stops at Michigan State and Michigan next week.
