ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The No. 40 Indiana women's tennis team took down another top-10 opponent in No. 10 Michigan on Sunday, 5-2. It was the second time this season that IU had beaten a top-10 team.
On its way to the victory, Indiana (14-5, 3-2) scored two singles wins over nationally ranked Michigan (13-4, 4-1) players and topped one nationally ranked Wolverines doubles tandem.
Michigan struck first in doubles as No. 2 Brooke Bolender and Emina Bektas topped IU's Leslie Hureau and Carolyn Chupa in the No. 1 match. Indiana responded with a win at No. 3 as Sophie Garre and Katie Klyczek made quick work of U-M's Mimi Nguyen and Kristen Dodge, 8-2.
The doubles point was decided in the No.2 match as IU's Alecia Kauss and Shannon Murdy answered the bell, defeating the No. 49 doubles tandem in the country in U-M's Ronit Yurovsky and Sarah Lee, 8-4.
With Indiana holding the early lead, Michigan's Bektas, ranked 20th nationally in singles, bested IU's Hureau, ranked 111th nationally, in the top singles match to even the score. The Wolverines then gained their first advantage of the match as U-M'a Amy Ahu defeated Indiana's Jithmie Jayawickrema in the No. 6 position, 6-3, 6-2.
The Hoosiers then went to work, beginning with a Garre singles win at No. 5 over Michigan's Nguyen, 7-6, 6-3. Then, 112th-ranked Klyczek pushed the Hoosiers ahead as she downed 39th-ranked Yurovsky of Michigan in an exciting three-set match, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.
In the No. 3 match, Indiana's Chupa took on 76th-ranked Lee of Michigan. Chupa won the first set, 6-2, before Lee struck back to take the second set, 2-6. The third and deciding set came down to a tiebreaker and Chupa held strong to take down Lee by a 7-4 margin in the tiebreak to take the march and clinch the team win for Indiana.
The Hoosiers gained their fifth point in the No. 4 singles match as Kauss was on the better end of another third-set tiebreaker over Michigan's Bolender, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7).
"I'm really proud of the way we competed. We just kept running down balls and making them hit one more," head coach Lin Loring said. "We haven't had two top wins in the same year in quite some time. What makes it more remarkable is that neither one was at home. When we are firing on all cylinders we tough to beat. Tiebreakers finally went our way. This match could not have been closer. Everyone will now know the win over No. 2 Duke was no fluke."
Indiana will next take on Iowa and Nebraska in road matches next weekend.
